Six thin copper-brass cups on six different cord lengths — so a gust rings them in a soft, irregular order that never quite repeats. This copper wind chime is closer to weather made audible than to an instrument.

The metal is bare and unlacquered, made to live outdoors and weather honestly. A 55 cm drop that hangs from a single hook.

  • Six cups, six cord lengths — a pattern that never repeats
  • Bare copper-brass, ages beautifully outdoors
  • 55 cm drop, one-hook hanging

Yfirlit

A garden can be finished and still silent: the pots in the right corner, the gravel raked, the olive tree settled. Then you sit in it on a warm evening with nothing to listen to but traffic and a neighbour's extractor fan.

Rill gives the wind something to do there. It is closer to the bell on a sheep in a field than to anything tuned: a soft, unhurried sound that comes and goes with the air, not a tune running up and down a scale.

Umhirða

Hang it and leave it; the weathering is the point. If leaves or cobwebs gather in the cups, rinse it with the hose and shake it. The bare metal darkens unevenly, brighter where rain runs off and browner in the crevices. That is normal, and it makes the chime look as if it has hung on that eave for years. To brighten it again, use a soft cloth and a little metal polish, though the patina then starts over; never use wire wool or a scouring pad, which score the satin finish for good. Take it down before a real storm: 100 g of bells on thin cord is better off the hook in a gale. After several seasons outdoors the cord stiffens and frays, so thread the bells onto fresh 1–2 mm cord and it goes on.

Efni

Copper-brass alloy throughout, left bare and without lacquer so that it weathers naturally outdoors.

  • Crown bell: ~6 cm cast bell with dragon-and-cloud relief
  • Six bells: ~3 cm plain satin cups with thin walls
  • Beads and cord: 2 amber glass beads, braided outdoor cord and a brass wind-catch disc
  • Size: ~55 cm drop, ~100 g

One hook, done

Hang it where the wind blows

The corner of a terrace, the gap between the house and the wall, a gable end or the underside of an eave: anywhere the air really moves, and not a sheltered spot where it sounds only when touched. It hangs on a plaited loop, so one small hook is all the installation it needs.

It weathers in

It gets better the longer it is outdoors

The metal is bare, with no lacquer. The first summer takes off the shine, the first winter begins the honey-brown, and by the second year there is green in the relief of the crown bell. As it weathers the tone becomes drier and drops slightly, so it sounds older as well.

Different every time

A ring you cannot predict

Six bells hang at six heights with two loose glass beads drifting between them. No two gusts sound alike, nothing runs up a scale, and it is never loud enough to be a nuisance on a still night.

Hung it under the porch eave

Bought it for the corner of the porch where the wind funnels through and it has barely stopped since. Quieter than I expected — you hear it standing at the kitchen door, not from inside with the window shut, which is exactly what I wanted. The small bells are thin and light so they clatter rather than clang.

Went brown over one summer

Bright gold when it arrived, honey by August, and now a proper dull bronze with green sitting in the pattern on the top bell. I like it far more this way. Odd thing — the six little bells dulled first and the big embossed one held its shine longest.

Delicate by design — hang it close

Worth saying out loud: the little bells are about the size of a thimble and the whole thing is roughly half a metre. I hung mine off a low olive branch at head height where you actually walk past it, and there it's lovely — built for a spot you pass close to rather than the far end of a big garden.

Algengar spurningar

What volume is it?
Soft and for close range. Six thin-walled cups about 3 cm across make a light, dry clatter and not a resonant ring, which can be heard across a terrace or from an open back door. It is made for a spot you often pass close to, not for carrying across a large garden.
Can it stay outdoors all year?
Yes, that is its purpose. The metal is bare copper-brass, so it weathers and does not rust, moving from bright gold through honey to a deep brown-green in the first year or two. Thread the bells onto fresh 1–2 mm cord after a few seasons and it goes on indefinitely.
Hvernig er það fest upp?
By the plaited loop at the top, which slips over anything: a cup hook under an eave, a shepherd's crook, a nail in a pergola, a branch or a balcony rail. At 100 g it needs nothing structural.
Is it tuned to a musical scale?
No, on purpose. The six cups hang on six different lengths of cord with loose glass beads between them, so gusts strike them in an order that never repeats: irregular and unhurried, more like bells in a field than music.
How many bells does it have?
Six plain satin cups hang under one larger cast crown bell with raised dragon-and-cloud relief, which serves as the canopy they hang from. Two amber glass beads and a pierced brass disc complete the tail.
